BEST ALBUMS OF 2013 – Jonathan

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN – The legendary ‘Best Albums Of The Year’ time.

Like previous years roundups, the list contains mostly albums that came out this year but I’ve also included albums that I got in to this year even if they were old. It’s not cheating, its simply a round-up of what I’ve loved in 2013. Also, there’s no order to this list as that would be too hard

1) Editors – The Weight of Your Love
If I were forced to pick an ‘album of the year’ then this would make the top spot. It’s a return to the more guitar based Editors of the first and second albums, but bigger. Great melodies and grooves and has been on my stereo all year. Michael and I got to see them live a few weeks back and they were stunning. Such showmanship, such energy and a massive sound. Up there with my fav bands of all time.

2) The National – Trouble Will Find Me
Another classic National album. Not sure the melodies are as strong as the last two albums however, it still rocks and has been a big player for me this year. Would have loved to have seen them live but missed my chance this year.

3) Andy Burrows – Company
For those not in the know, Andy Burrows was the drummer in Razorlight and We Are Scientists. He co-wrote and performed my favourite festive album with the singer of Editors – Funny Looking Angels (check it here people). He was the brains behind the Snowman and Snow Dog thing (never saw it) and at the start of the year his solo album ‘Company’ came out. It is such a great listen, quite folky but with great pop melodies. Been up there for me all year.

4) Bastille – Bad Blood
I had heard a few singles at the back end of 2012 and was very much looking forward to this album. It didn’t disappoint and will have you moving and shaking

5) Alt J – An Awesome Wave
This isn’t the type of album you have on to get pumped. It’s a weird one and one that I seem to put on to accompany other tasks. That’s not the best way of selling it but hey, I very much enjoy it

6) Pet Shop Boys – Electric
Their highest charting album in 10 years and it has some killer tunes on it. A few fillers but when they hit the mark they smash it.

7) King Charles – Loveblood
I got in to half of this album right at the start of the year. It’s split down the middle for me with half of the album being stunning (and i mean STUNNING) and half being….Meh

There’s been plenty of one off tracks by various artists that have been massive for me this year but I wont bore you with a list. All I will say is that Nicki Minaj, Paramore, James Blunt & Pitbull may all be on that list (Damn I’m cool).

A Taster of Things To Come

Our album is due for release through Spectra Records in a matter of days and we are looking forward to seeing what happens. Although we are are currently dedicating our time to promote this album, we’re also demoing new material and we are extremely excited with the ideas that are coming out. Here’s a very rough extract from a mobile phone recording of a new songs called ‘Mexico’. It was the first time we went through it and everything is really rather raw, but I think you can hear that this will be a foot tapper live. Please comment and let us know what you think

We also had the pleasure of spending a morning at the beach whilst we were in Wirral last month. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to record a little video. Here’s Michael doing a solo version of ‘Folk Songs & Jazz Bands’ taken from our up coming Spectra released album ‘All I Have Is Here’
